About the Platform
What is the Competency Gauge
The Competency Gauge is an aptitude testing platform developed by Prepared for Duty Recruitment Service Inc. It delivers validated assessments designed to measure core, applied, leadership-based competencies, and more. While the platform is focused on providing aptitude testing solutions relevant to municipal and emergency services roles, our aptitude tests can be customized to fit a variety other contexts. Through the administration of bulk testing, our practice test offerings, and our open-enrolment tests, the Competency Gauge supports both candidates and the organizations that hire them.
Who is it for?
The platform serves two audiences: municipalities and hiring organizations looking to integrate objective, defensible aptitude testing into their recruitment process and candidates invited to complete assessments as part of a specific recruitment or who want to practice, explore, and prepare on their own.
How are assessments kept secure?
Sponsored assessments run through Safe Exam Browser, which locks down the candidate’s device during testing. Webcam proctoring captures images at regular intervals for identity verification. Combined, these measures support the integrity and defensibility of your results.
For Candidates
How do I access my assessment?
If you’ve been invited to complete a sponsored assessment, your recruiter will provide a unique access/coupon code. After registering for a free account on the platform, use that code to enrol (more information regarding this process should have been provided alongside your access code). If you’re here to practice on your own or explore available tests that companies have made open to the public as part of their recruitment efforts, visit the candidates page.
If you are experiencing any issues accessing your assessment, please contact your recruiter directly or Prepared for Duty via our contact page or by emailing us at hello@preparedforduty.ca.
Do I need to download anything?
Closed sponsored assessments require Safe Exam Browser (SEB), a free and secure browser available for Windows and macOS. The platform will prompt you to download it when you access your assessment.
Open sponsored assessments may or may not require Safe Exam Browser, please refer to the specific information provided about the assessment you are enrolling in for more information.
Practice tests do not require Safe Exam Browser, unless otherwise stated by the specific practice test.
How do I view my results?
Sponsored assessments don’t display individual scores on the platform — your recruiter or hiring organization communicates the results. However, practice test results are visible immediately following submission, unless otherwise stated.
For Employers and Organizations
What kinds of roles can the Competency Gauge assess?
We currently develop assessments for municipal and emergency services roles such as Fire Chief, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Police Officer, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Utility Operator, and more, but we can develop them in collaboration with organizations for a variety of roles as needed. Competency categories can be selected and customized to match the specific demands of the role you’re hiring for.
How does a sponsored assessment work?
When your organization engages Prepared for Duty to administer testing as part of a recruitment, candidates receive a unique access code granting them access to their assessment. Your organization receives the results.
